LinkedtoAsia Teacher Spotlight: Steven Stern

As we work daily to create cultural opportunities for all persons, we know that it is best received in the words of our teachers with boots on the ground. We hope that you find this series enlightening and that you have an inclination to follow their experiences on our social media and be able to reach out to them with words of encouragement, questions that you may have about experiencing this for yourself and your friends, and/or a kind digital high five to for their achievements. As always, LinkedtoAsia is recruiting and keeping opportunities available for those that want to experience the world in a culturally magnificent way!

Overall, my experience with LinkedToAsia has been amazing, and I would happily do it again.

My name is Steven Stern. I’m a 26-year-old college graduate from San Diego, California. I graduated from San Diego State University in May 2019. My hobbies have always been reading, writing, and playing video games. I’ve played computer games for most of my life, having gotten my first computer when I was 6 years old. That means I’ve been staring at computer screens for almost 20 years now, and I can still see just fine.

My background in teaching English as a Second Language is nonexistent. However, my background in teaching has a little more experience. Since I am a Journalism major, I do believe that Journalism is a form of teaching.

Especially investigative journalism, where you must search for a story, write it up, and then find a way to condense it into a palatable form. Along with my major, I’ve also had a knack for helping others understand various things through my life. I’ve always found a way to explain something in a different way to someone if they were confused.

I joined LinkedToAsia because I wanted to travel and experience different things after 26 years in America. I wanted to discover the difficulties, differences, and rewards of going into another country. There is plenty of all three, but I do not regret my decision.

My school treats me well, and the students are excited whenever I begin class for a lesson. My lessons are different each week, while still trying to highlight the importance of speaking in a language class. Books and memorizing words can only take you so far after all.

Daily life outside of work is becoming easier. My apartment is comfortable, and there are a few things to do in Daishan on time off, but I’m mainly an introverted person, which means I much prefer to stay in and watch a movie than go out. I also understand that I didn’t travel thousands of miles away from home just to stare at a computer, so I make a habit to try and practice my Chinese every week with someone. I study every day and have a conversation with someone every few days in Chinese.

Overall, my experience with LinkedToAsia has been amazing, and I would happily do it again. I’ve always wanted to try out a new lifestyle and travel, and I’m so happy to be able to do both in the same opportunity.
